Predicting the Dream Team – Foomni Vs. Texan (Gameweek 37)

Hello, and welcome to the 14th edition of Predicting the Dream Team brought to you by me, FPL Texan. In this article, we preview FPL Gameweek 37.

In this series, I go head-to-head each week with Foomni Analytics to see who can select the best team of the week, their algorithm or myself. It is a classic battle of man vs. machine!

So first off, let’s take a look at who won the 13th battle in GW36, myself or Foomni.

FPL Texan589964
Foomni’s Algo414920

As you can see, I have won this week and pushed the overall score to 9-4!

The main separator was the captaincy selection, as I selected Salah whist Algo picked Son.

Moving onto GW37, let’s take a look at Foomni Analytics’ team and a brief explanation of their algorithm.

Foomni’s Predicted Team of the Week (Gameweek 37)

Algo is a predictive algorithm developed by Foomni Analytics, with the goal of projecting FPL player points as correctly as possible. This is Algo’s second full season, and every week it makes new projections for all players and uses them to pick that week’s Dream Team, and provide general FPL advice.

Algo’s brain is a complex system that uses the data from several previous seasons to calculate a player’s form, and then determines what factors affect a player’s form, and applies appropriate modifiers to reflect them.

If you are interested to know more about Algo’s inner workings, this is a good place to start.

It is important to note that there may be a few final changes to Algo’s team following the press conferences.

Next, we will look at my predicted team of the week and my reasoning behind each decision.

Texan’s Predicted Team of the Week (Gameweek 37)

Important note before we begin – this is not my actual team for Gameweek 37, but instead my predicted team of the week (almost as though I had a free hit to choose as I wish).

  • Price: £5.9m
  • Ownership: 6.9%
  • Projected Points: 5.06 Points

Liverpool’s hero from last gameweek Alisson makes the team of the week this week. Over the last three games, Burnley’s attack has been middle of the road, at 9th highest, whilst Liverpool’s defence has been quite strong with the 7th best xGA. Burnley seem to be looking ahead to next season with not much to play for based on Dyche’s presser this week, so I think all Liverpool assets are great this gameweek.

Alisson averages 2.45 saves per match, so there is potential for a save point.

  • Price: £7.7m
  • Ownership: 24.8%
  • Projected Points: 6.50 Points

Trent unsurprisingly is in the team of the week again this week. There is not a hotter defender in the league then Trent at the moment, as he looks to have fully regained his scorching form from the last few seasons. He leads all defenders in the league in xA over the last 5 gameweeks at 2.31 and leads Liverpool in the same category.

Trent is the best defender in FPL right now, and is a differential captaincy choice this week for those looking to make a late push.

  • Price: £5.5m
  • Ownership: 18.0%
  • Projected Points: 4.52 Points

Luke Shaw is back in the team of the week with a nice matchup against Fulham. Since Fulham officially got relegated, they have become a great fixture to target with an xG of just 1.94 in their last 3 games which is a league worst. This bodes well for United defenders this week, who even without Maguire are still a solid defence. Shaw also provides attacking return potential, ranking second in xA over the last 5 games on the team.

United should handle Fulham quite easily, and I think a double digit performance from Shaw is possible in it.

  • Price: £5.4m
  • Ownership: 30.7%
  • Projected Points: 5.23 Points

Dallas rounds out the defenders this week with a fixture against Southampton. Leeds have been below average as of late, ranking in the bottom 10 for xGA in the league over the last 5 games. Southampton have also been below average in attack, with an xG in the bottom half of the league. But the main reason we have Dallas is his attacking potential playing in the midfield. Over the last 5 games he has an xG of 1.00 which is second in the league for defenders.

With a decent defensive matchup combined with his attacking potential playing OOP, Dallas makes the team of the week.

  • Price: £12.8m
  • Ownership: 40.2%
  • Projected Points: 7.83 Points

Salah is my captain this week with a great matchup against Burnley. Over the last 5 gameweeks, Liverpool lead the league in xG at 11.73, whilst Burnley rank in the bottom 10 for xGA. Salah has been in great form during this push for top 4 for Liverpool, ranking second in xG (2.45) and third in xA (1.36) over the last 5 games.

Salah and Liverpool are firing on all cylinders at the moment to push for top 4, so the Egyptian king is my captain this week.

  • Price: £11.4m
  • Ownership: 51.7%
  • Projected Points: 7.04 Points

Bruno is back in the team of the week with the matchup against Fulham. Over the last 4 games, Fulham have an xGA of 8.46, which is 6th worst since April 15th. Bruno and United on the other hand are 6th best for xG over the same period, so the United attack is a good target this week. Bruno has been in great form, leading the team in xG (2.32) and 4th in xA (0.65) since April 15th.

I expected United to do very well against Fulham, so Bruno is a no brainer in my team.

  • Price: £7.3m
  • Ownership: 10.4%
  • Projected Points: 3.26 Points

Greenwood rounds out my United triple up this week. The team stats have already been highlighted earlier in the article, so looking at Greenwoods stats, we can see that he has been instrumental in their performances as of late. He has 4 goals in his last 5 games, and is second in xG over that period on the team behind Bruno. He is also averaging 4.55 shots per 90mins which shows how active he is in looking for the net.

Greenwood is in great form at the moment, so he makes my team of the week.

  • Price: £5.5m
  • Ownership: 7.3%
  • Projected Points: 3.93 Points

Raphinha is the last midfield selection to the starting squad this week. Southampton defense has been below average as of late, ranking 8th worst in xGA since April 15. Raphinha has looked good since returning from injury, with 2 assists since returning 2 games ago and ranking third in xA over that time.

Raphinha has been a great option all season, and I think he is a great choice this week against Southampton.

  • Price: £11.8m
  • Ownership: 45.4%
  • Projected Points: 7.76 Points

Kane is back in the team of the week this week with a matchup against Villa. Spurs rank 3rd in xG since April 15th, and Kane is one of the main reasons for that. Kane leads the league in xG since April 15th at 3.75, scoring 3 goals over that period. He also ranks third in xA for Spurs over that time period.

Kane is in phenomenal form at the moment, a no brainer in the team of the week.

  • Price: £7.6m
  • Ownership: 33.7%
  • Projected Points: 4.93 Points

DCL is back in the team of the week with a nice matchup against Wolves. Since April 15th, Everton have been strong offensively ranking 7th in xG. DCL has been a big part of that ranking 1st in xG (2.18) and second xA (1.02) on the team over that same time period.

Wolves defence has not looked good as of late, so DCL makes the team this week.

  • Price: £6.5m
  • Ownership: 41.7%
  • Projected Points: 5.00 Points

Bamford rounds out the team of the week this week as he and Leeds face Southampton. The team stats have already been discussed in the Dallas and Raphinha sections so we will focus on Bamford here. Over the last 5 games, Bamford ranks first on the team for xG (1.77). Whilst he is a rotation risk as of late, coming off around the 60 minute mark, he still is a great pick.

Bamford is only playing around 60 mins in recent matches, but that could be all he needs for a haul.
