Man City

Ahead of the Community Shield, Pep confirms everyone – bar Fernandinho and Benjamin Mendy – should be in contention for Sundays’ clash with Liverpool.

He goes on to suggest that Aymeric Laporte will recover from the minor knock which threatened to rule him out initially:

“Except Fernandinho, everybody is back. Today arrived the last two – Ederson and Riyad Mahrez – and two days ago, Sergio Aguero, Nicolas Otamendi and Gabriel Jesus came back.”

However, Pep mentions that his squad is not in the best physical shape and suggests they will play with those who have played in pre-season:

“The physical condition [of the squad] is not the best. We will try to play with players who played in pre-season because they have rhythm. The guys who came back later maybe will have a few mins – more chance of [being] a sub. I think it will be hot in London.”

Additionally, Claudio Bravo is expected to start in place of Ederson in goal tomorrow, given that Ederson only returned 2 days ago:

“It’s not easy at 33, 34 after one year out. He is going to play. He’s been good, really good. He started training towards the end of last season. Now he is fit. He will be ready.”

Jurgen Klopp says he will rotate on Sunday:

“We’ll make a squad for the game, not for the season. We will find the line-up, for sure. We will find a starting line-up where you can change. In a game [early] in the season, against a very demanding opponent – who asks for a lot of footwork and runs and all that stuff – we will probably use all six [substitutes].”

Alisson, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino all returned from extended breaks against Lyon on Wednesday while Xerdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita were also involved in the 3-1 win following their recovery from injury.

Sadio Mané will not be involved; the No.10 links up with the squad again on Monday having reached the Africa Cup of Nations final with Senegal last month.

My Team

Based on the fact that Man City have more first teamers available who are fit for this match, I’m picking more players from them than Liverpool.

Raheem Sterling, Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva have all managed significant game time in pre-season and should subsequently be the most match fit. All have posted good stats in pre-season games too:

  • Raheem Sterling – 4 games, 4 goals, 2 assists, 244 minutes
  • Kevin de Bruyne – 4 games, 1 goal, 3 assists, 229 minutes
  • David Silva – 4 games, 2 goals, 1 assist, 196 minutes

I don’t expect either team to keep a clean sheet, so I have chosen the player in defence I believe has the best chance of attacking returns in Trent Alexander Arnold.

He takes corners, free-kicks and attacks down the right channel offering aggressive overlapping runs. With 1 goal and 13 assists to his name in FPL last season, he just about pips Robertson’s attacking threat on the other side for me.

And finally, I’ve chosen Mohamed Salah.

Sadio Mané will miss the game and out of Salah and Firmino, I believe Salah is the more threatening to the City defence.

I don’t expect either Salah or Firmino to finish the game, but out of the two, I believe Salah will last longer on the pitch before being substituted down to Firmino’s long participation in the Copa America, which saw his team go all the way to the final and win it whereas Salah’s Egypt in the AFCON by comparison, were knocked out in the round of 16 to South Africa.

Raheem Sterling will be my captain of choice, given his excellent pre-season form.
